A New 3D Printer!
Thanks to a generous donation from Gizmo Garden http://gizmogarden.org/
Skidompha now has a 3D printer!
Ours is a "PrintrBot", a type of printer which uses fused deposition modelling (FDM). The technology works using a plastic filament or metal wire which is unwound from a coil and delivered to an extrusion nozzle which can turn the flow on and off. The nozzle is heated to melt the material and can be moved in both horizontal and vertical directions by a mechanism that is directly controlled by a computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software package. The object is produced by extruding melted material to form layers as the material hardens immediately after leaving the nozzle.
We have had a lot of fun building mini robots, cookie cutters, ornaments, and even a belt buckle. Stop by the kids desk and make a request to see what we can build for you!
