Woo-Hoo! Chewonki’s Owls of Maine
Thursday, March 1, 10 am
Chewonki Outreach Instructor Emma Balazs will speak about the owls native to Maine and New England. Emma graduated from Colby College with a B.A. in Biology. Her time is spent traveling on the road teaching nature programs and working in Chewonki’s lab caring for its residential animals. She has worked for Farm and Wilderness in Vermont where she led educational activities for young girls and on a diversified organic farm in Skowhegan.
Beginning with viewing slides and hearing sounds, participants will learn identifying characteristics and calls of each owl. Then, using talons, wings, and skull specimens, Emma will explore with the audience the adaptations of these beautiful silent nocturnal hunters.
The program ends with an intimate and detailed look at three live non-releasable owls, such as the Barred Owl, Great Horned Owl, Screech or Saw-whet Owl, which are the highlights of this engaging program.
All are welcome. “Chats With Champions” series is a free community offering sponsored by The First, 223 Main St., Damariscotta, a community bank chartered in the mid-1800’d that has grown to serve customers at fourteen branches along the coast of Maine.
In case of very inclement weather, call the library at 563-5513 to confirm that events will be held as scheduled.

Connecting Boys with Books: A Community Talk Sponsored by Skidompha Library
All Day, Tuesday, March 6
Thanks to a grant from the Margaret A. Burnham Charitable Trust, Skidompha Library is happy to offer the expertise of Michael Sullivan (right) to the Midcoast Maine community for events throughout the day on Tuesday, March 6.Michael Sullivan is a librarian, teacher, and storyteller who speaks all over the country about how to connect kids with books. His specific interest is in the differences between how boys and girls learn and read. Mike is a spellbinding speaker who uses the science of brain development, studies about literacy, his experience as a teacher and librarian, and his talent as a storyteller to engage audiences on the topic of literacy.
“Michael Sullivan is one of the best speakers I have ever heard,” says Jenny Mayher, Skidompha Children’s librarian. “I heard him speak at a librarian conference three years ago, and his ideas have had a huge impact on how we buy and recommend books in the Skidompha Kids room. We have been trying to find a way to bring him here for several years, and we are thrilled that it is finally happening!”
“Our grant allows the library to bring Mike here for the entire day on March 6,” says Pam Gormley, Executive Director of Skidompha Library. “He is going to be very busy that day, talking about books with everyone from toddlers to great-grandparents. It should be a great day.”
Sullivan will start the morning at the Damariscotta-Newcastle Rotary Club breakfast, then lead workshops throughout the day, culminating with a free evening talk at 6:30 at the Lincoln Theater entitled “Connecting Boys with Books.” This community talk will be of particular interest to the parents, grandparents, and teachers of reluctant and emergent readers, as well as librarians, writers, and book lovers in general.
All of Michael Sullivan’s workshops are free, and everyone who attends the evening community talk will be entered to win a door prize: one of three gift cards to the Maine Coast Bookshop in Damariscotta.
For more information or to reserve a place at the Librarian’s Lunch or Teacher Dinner, call Skidompha Library at 563-5513 or email children@msln.net
