2025.03.13 Right to Read Book Clubs

Dear friends,

Just a few things to touch on this week. Please remember to come support Skidompha at the Nobleboro Town Annual Town Meeting #1 on Saturday, March 15th. The meeting will be held at the Nobleboro Central School gymnasium, 194 Center St, Nobleboro, at 10am.

Also, I’m proud to mention that Skidimpha is offering two Right to Read book discussion programs for kids. The Right to Read book club series aims to amplify the voices of marginalized authors and people. Participants will receive a free copy of the book, and the meeting will consist of a book discussion and fun related activities. Parents must register their children to participate by calling 207.887.0919.

Our first Right to Read book club is for Grades 1-3 and will be held on Tuesday, Apr. 8 from 3:15pm-4:15pm. That week is National Library Week, and we will start our celebration by discussing Molly’s Tuxedo by Vicki Johnson. Written for children ages 4-8, Molly’s Tuxedo has been nominated for this year’s Chickadee Award and is a Charlotte Huck Award recommended book. Molly’s Tuxedo is about feeling good about yourself. School picture day is coming up, and while Molly’s mom has a nice dress picked out, Molly knows she would much rather wear her brother’s old tuxedo. It has pockets, isn’t too tight, and doesn’t have any hard-to-reach zippers.

On Thursday April 10 from 3:15–4:15 we will continue celebrating National Library Week and the freedom to read, with a discussion of the book Melissa, by Alex Gino. Written for children Grades 4-6, Melissa won three major awards in 2016: The Stonewall Book Award, The California Book Award, and the Lambda Literary Award. Melissa, previously published as George, is the story of a young trans girl navigating fourth grade and her need to be herself.

Space is limited, so register soon!

Be well,

Matthew
