2025.05.08 Looking Forward to Summer Reading

Dear Friends,

Not too much to report on this week. I’m back from visiting friends and family in North Carolina. It was lovely to see my nieces and nephews. At the risk of sounding like a caricature of a proud uncle, they are fabulous, and kind, and smart, and I’ll stop there before I drift into a hyperbolic overdose. All are in the process of either graduating, starting school, or starting a new job.

Skidompha’s Summer Read event is coming up. We’ll have our kickoff party on Saturday, June 7th and we hope you’ll attend. Like last year, and the year before that, our brilliant librarians are putting together a summer’s worth of programming, games, challenges–and maybe a few prizes–to keep us all occupied and having fun all summer long. A special shout out to our Adult Librarian, Chloe, who will be programming her first Summer Read this year! She has some great things planned.

And thank you also to all the people who have donated to our Spring Appeal. Your gifts make all of this possible, all the wonderful programming, our broad and deep collection, even the less obvious things like paying energy bills and facility repairs happen because of your generosity. We appreciate your gifts.

Finally, while spring is upon us bringing flowers and warmth, the stresses of the world and our lives remain. Please follow some advice given to me by a wise friend, treat yourself like your own best friend. Take a moment to go outside, feel the sun on your face, appreciate the trees bursting to life, and breathe.

Be well,

Matthew
