2025.05.15 Horseshoe Crabs and Updates

Dear Friends,

Just a couple of quick notes today because I want to get outside and enjoy some of this sunshine!

To start, I want to take a moment to give a shout out to our spectacular and award winning Secondhand Bookshop. Located behind the Elm Street Plaza on the river, which happens to be a perfect spot to view the great spring horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) migration. By my clock we should start seeing them around the Flower Moon, or the first full moon of May, or May 12th. Besides offering an amazing selection of books, and staffed by the finest of volunteers, the Secondhand Bookshop is a wonderful place to sit and watch our prehistoric chelicerate friends crawl along the shore as they have done for eons. Watching them I am brought back to lovely memories of my childhood watching them meander along the shores of Long Island Sound. Our Bookshop is staffed entirely by volunteers and all sales proceeds go directly to supporting Skidompha. Please consider stopping by and making use of the very special and idyllic place.

Also, on Saturday, May 24th between 1- and 2 pm, we will be having a Shelf to Table Community Event. This program is focused on raising awareness for the Skidompha Help Yourself Food Shelf and on food insecurity in Lincoln County. We will be joined by community partners who will bring resources to distribute. We will also unveil a new shelving structure for our pantry, paid for by ARSL’s 2025 Sustainable and Resilient New England Libraries grant. Please consider bringing a donation of an unopened, unexpired food item or personal hygiene article. I hope to see you there!

Be well,

Matthew
