2025.09.18 The Library as a Third Place

Dear Friends,

I got word from my brother that yesterday, Monday, September 15th, was my youngest nephew’s first day of classes at college. I’m told Kevin said it was “fine”, which had me laughing at his ubiquitous, if not overly emotional, response. I am so very proud of Kevin, as well as all his brothers and sisters, and his parents as well. My brother has a big change of life in front of him, one that I am certain he will meet with the calm excellence and maturity he has he has used to meet all his challenges.

September is filled with changes. Cooler weather, shorter days, dazzling colors, and kids going back to school. It is a time when Skidompha shines, where one of our most vital yet underrated resources — space — is particularly valuable for our community. While much of Maine quiets down with the change of seasons, we remain bustling with activity with kids dropping in after school to spend time at Skidompha. It’s genuinely fulfilling to see them walking through the door.

Skidompha offers a third space, a safe, climate-controlled space with unique resources, for kids to come after school. They are welcome here, can stay as long as they wish, and are not obligated to purchase anything. We offer programs, craft supplies, WiFi, space for gaming, books, snacks, and a place to just be and relax after a heavily-schedule day of classes, all for free and all without obligation.

The idea of the third place was first put into words by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in the early 1970s. Third places are important as being the hub of our community beyond our homes and our places of work — they are the spaces that welcome us, where we meet our friends and neighbors, and nourish ourselves with no obligations. Libraries have no barrier to entry. They are free and open, and we do our best to offer not only the space but also enrichment to any and every person who walks through the door. You are all always welcome.

Be well,

Matthew

P.S. Next week on Thursday, September 25th from 3:30-5:0pm, Skidompha, in partnership with Hearty Roots is offering a class on navigation in the Teen Room. Solar, celestial, and classic compass techniques will be taught, and you will create your very own map.
