Dear Friends,
I took a little time off last week to head down and visit friends on Long Island. It’s always lovely taking the New London-Orient Point boat down and then driving west, and I was lucky to get banner day of blue skies and warm temps for my travels. I hadn’t seen them in quite a while, but the laughter, food, and drink flowed as if we had never been apart. Some of the best nourishment for the soul, that, and of course my good friend the Marvelous Miss Nancy made sure I was treated to some of her best desserts. She makes a diabolically delicious Apple Crisp!
Since this is a busy week for Damariscotta and Skidompha, here is a quick reminder of the neat things we have coming up!
In observance of Banned Books Week, we will be showing The Librarians on Thursday, October 9, at 7:00 PM. I’m very proud to announce that Skidompha will be hosting the area premier of this new documentary film that tells of the personal experiences of librarians and everyday citizens who fight censorship and defend books and our freedom to read. I gently urge you to attend and learn more about the on-going efforts to censor books in libraries. While not as prominent in the news, book banning is still a serious problem that shows no signs of going away. Since our auditorium has limited seating, we do ask that you RSVP by emailing Gab at gsmith@skidompha.org
Satuday, October 11th will be both a delicious and busy day here at Skidompha as we host the Pumpkinfest Dessert Contest. Our doors will open for dessert drop offs starting at 10am. Please note that there will be no sales made in Skidompha. Desserts will be available for purchase when the Bake Sale moves outside under a Busker Tent on Elm Street lot. Please see: https://www.mainepumpkinfest.com/dessert-contest for details on how to enter.
And finally, close out the evening of the 11th with a special Pumpkin Jam concert performed by Novel Jazz. Music will start at 7pm and seating informal and open—no tickets or reservations. Enjoy music from the Great American Songbook, with tunes befitting the fall season. Admission is free and all are welcome to this special concert, but in lieu of purchasing a ticket, Skidompha suggests that attendees bring either a financial donation (suggested $20/person) for the library, or food or personal hygiene items for Skidompha’s Little Food Pantry to support other community members in need. Pantry items must not be expired and must be unopened.
Be well,
Matthew
