Dear Friends,
A long one this week!
You should be seeing our Fall Appeal in your mailbox starting last week. I cannot stress enough how important your donation is to Skidompha. Your gift enables us to do all the things we do. Whether that be providing an after-school space for young adults to spend time, free interlibrary loans from around the country, traditional library services, concerts, crafting programs, summer reading activities, adult gaming and game nights, children’s theater, book clubs and silent reading nights, free access to both our non-traditional and digital lending library, and to a “third space,” we are here for you!
Next, Skidompha Library and the Skidompha Bookshop will be participating in the Damariscotta Early Bird on November 1st. Skidompha Library will open at 6am and will be accepting items for our Little Free Pantry. This fall could be exceptionally difficult for many people, and I urge you, if you plan on visiting Skidompha that morning, to please bring something for our pantry. We will be accepting non-perishable goods and personal grooming and hygiene items. Remember, we’re all in this together. We will also be offering limited library services (browsing, computer usage, reading space, printing/faxing/scanning, and self-checkout — no circulation desk services) that morning until 10am when we open fully at our regular time.
The Skidompha Secondhand Book Shop will open at 6am and hold a storewide half-price sale. Every item, except gift certificates, will be on sale at half price all day until the shop closes at 4. After that day, a special half-price sale on vintage books will continue through Sunday, November 9. The bookshop is located on the river in downtown Damariscotta at 17 Backstreet Landing, behind the Elm Street Plaza.
The following week, Maine author Bruce Coffin will be speaking at Skidompha on November 4th at 4pm. A retired detective sergeant and award-winning international bestselling novelist and short story writer, Coffin is the author of the Detective Byron Mysteries, the Turner and Mosley Files (with LynDee Walker), and the Detective Justice Mysteries. Coffin will be here to discuss his works and career, and drop some hints about his newest novel set in the wilderness of Maine, Crimson Thaw. This should be a fascinating program, and I hope you will stop by.
Finally, we are looking for EPOCH editors and art. Have you heard of EPOCH? It’s the library’s professionally published magazine for teens and by teens. It features art of all media types as well as written pieces from students all over the Midcoast. The Editorial Board will meet every Thursday afternoon from 4:30pm to 5:30pm starting on Thursday, December 4th. Applications to be a Board member should be sent to epoch@skidompha.org and include the words “Epoch Editorial Board” and your name in the subject line. In the body of your email please introduce yourself and tell us your age, grade, where you are educated, and why you wish to join the Editorial Board. Finally, please attach a sample of your art as either a .doc or .pdf for written work, or as a high resolution .png or .jpeg for visual art.
That’s all for now.
Thanks, and be well,
Matthew
