Dear Friends,
Skidompha has so many different resources, it’s sometimes easy to miss them as you go about your normal library activities. In response, I wanted to let you know about a few new collections we have on our shelves.
To start with, Chloe, our Adult Services Librarian, is putting together a great selection of books about video games and the video game industry. Some titles include: Critical Hits: Writers Playing Video Games, Atari Age: The emergence of Video Games in America, The art of Failure: An Essay on the Pain of Playing Video Games, and Achievement Relocked: Loss Aversion and Game Design. This really is a fascinating topic, as much about people as the games themselves.
Skidompha is also building a collection of books about music as well. We have Burning Down the Haus: Punk Rock, Revolution, and the Fall of the Berlin Wall, The Story of ABBA: Melancholy Undercover, and Hip Hop is History, by Questlove, and plenty more. Side note: please remember that Chloe will be holding the first session of her new program called Liner Notes: Music Discussion Club. This program is for adults and teens 16 years and older, and meets on Saturday, February 7 10:30AM-12:00PM. Chloe describes her program as follows, “…Every month we’ll post a question which uses music as a starting point, and we invite you to join us for the related discussion. Join us for brunch in the Carpenter Room for our inaugural meeting, where we’ll be chatting about the following question: What is an album or song you would share with a new acquaintance to give them an idea of what you enjoy?”
We’ve also been ordering books to boost our sports collection. Roughly fifteen to twenty new titles have been delivered covering sports such as lacrosse, baseball, ultimate frisbee, boxing basketball, women in sports, college football, and more. Most of these are in the process of being cataloged but they will be on display shortly in the Atrium. Look for the new display coming out this week on the table in the Atrium. I hope you take a look and consider checking out one (or more) of these fascinating books.
Be well,
Matthew
