Hello Friends,
I’ll be away from Skidompha for a few weeks in May. The library will be in the best of hands while I am gone as Terry, Chloe, Meghan, Hannah, Gab, Becky, and Samantha do their usual superlative work and keep things running smoothly. Authorship of this weekly letter will be shared among staff, and I guarantee the content will be fascinating, with a good chance of funny as well.
A few programmatic highlights before I go, today, at 10am and again at 4pm on Thursday, April 30th, we will be hosting an introductory program on artificial intelligence titled: Understanding Artificial Intelligence: A Practical Guide for the Everyday Person. This program offers a clear, practical overview of AI without technical jargon or pressure to adopt new tools. We’ll talk about benefits and limitations, how to recognize misleading or AI-generated content, how to check sources, and how to make informed choices about privacy and data.
For music lovers looking to connect with other music lovers and talk about music, keep an eye out for Chloe’s Liner Notes music discussion program. Held the first Saturday of every month at 10:30 AM (next discussion is on Saturday, May 2nd), Chloe leads an informal conversation with other people who love and appreciate music in all its forms. For the month of May, the discussion question is: what kinds of creative acts has music inspired in you? Note, you DO NOT need to be a music expert to enjoy this discussion, and YOU MAY come away with an appreciation and interest in a new genre. This program is for Adults and Teens (16 years and older).
And finally, we are hosting FREE Math Tutoring in Pre-Algebra, Algebra and II, or Geometry! Sign up to get tutored by a Lincoln Academy student. Sessions are offered every other Friday, starting April 24th, 3:00pm – 4:30pm, and are for Grades 6-10. Please come prepared with any course material or homework that you want to work on. Email hdoktor@skidompha.org to register as registration is required.
The shoulder seasons are always dramatic in Maine with so much change. I expect I will miss most of that process while I am away. When I get back, I’m looking forward to seeing the arrival of horseshoe crabs (pro tip, visit the unparalleled Skidompha Book Shop for a great view of the ancient critters, and the kind welcome of our incomparable volunteers.
Be well,
Matthew
