2026.08.20 Upcoming Programs and an Introduction from Vivian

0

Dear Friends,

A couple of neat programs are coming up.

Today from 4:00-5:30 pm Chloe will be hosting Bedazzling Bookmarks! We’ll have some bookmarks for you, and a few samples to spark your creativity, but feel free to bring your own bookmarks as well. Note, this program is not limited solely to bookmarks. Use your imagination and bring in a card of your choice, a photograph, a book cover… I confess I was a sceptic at first, but Chloe has shown me a few examples she has made, including a couple of Pokemon cards, and they are amazing.

Looking for something super cool to do on Saturday, the 22nd? Skidompha has partnered with the L.C. Bates Museum of Natural History and Culture to offer a private tour of their grounds and museum. Your guide will teach you about life in the frozen tundra after the retreat of the last ice age in the Maritime Peninsula (Maine and Canada). Make a day of it and bring a picnic lunch and enjoy their beautiful trails. This event is from 1:00-3:00 pm this Saturday, and prior registration with our Children’s Librarian, Becky, is required.

Be well,
Matthew

PS — A quick addition to our Haps Newsletter! Skidompha, in association with Coastal Maine Regional Broadband, Cornerstone Financial Service, the Damariscotta Police, and the First National Bank, will host Red Flags of Scams, Social Media & Online Safety. Presenter Julie Casson of Coastal Maine Regional Broadband will discuss online scams and provide you with tools, information, and resources to empower yourself to spot and avoid online traps. This program starts at 10:30 am on Wednesday, August 26th and is part of a free series of monthly programs that will provide you with tools and information to help avoid digital and financial deception. Future topics include banking, Medicare, charity and holiday scams.

Now, I’m turning this over to Vivian, our new Teen Services Librarian.

Miss Vivian here;

I’d just like to say hi, and that I am so happy to be here!

Some background about me: I recently graduated with my Master of Library and Information Science degree from Syracuse University, where I learned all about librarianship, information accessibility, systemic injustice, and how to move forward in a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable manner, in order to best correct the wrongs of the system that has been established. I spent a great deal of my time learning the history of the written word, archives, and cultural competencies through those who have been silenced time and time again: People of Color (POC), women, the LGBTQIA+ community, etc. I am very thankful Syracuse is on the forefront of teaching how book burnings, theft, and systemic injustice has created a skewed sense of reality to those not of European decent, within libraries and the world of academia, as I believe this will make me a better librarian.

Through my educational background, and lived experiences, I aim to be a fountain of knowledge for the teens of Skidompha. I believe that books save lives, through creating new pathways for learning, understanding, and empathizing with the world in which we live. I hope to be a safe space for teens of the area, to come to and depend on for their information needs, whether that be finding their next read, to college help, crisis resources, or simply learning a new skill.

I am so thankful to be here, and to have been welcomed with such welcoming arms. I look forward to this next chapter as Teen Librarian, as I have been preparing for it for many years.

Cheers!
Vivian
