We’re approaching the end of Summer Read and I wanted to give you a gentle reminder to our Summer Read participants that your bingo sheets are due no later than Saturday, August 29th.
Holy-shmolies, how did we get to the end of August already? My cats, Sita and Kanha, have noticed the change and fully support the cooler nights by spending the nights resting at an open window and listening to the night sounds. Those concerts are so special, I love them. Whether it be a moth’s wings fluttering against the screen or an owl hooting me to sleep, I find those sounds calming and relaxing. On to business with notes about some great programs coming up!
September 5th at 10:00 AM, Martha White, granddaughter of the late E.B. White, will be here to read from the newly published book, The Duck Can’t Sleep. This event is free and all ages are welcome!
Are you wrestling with winter heating costs? Do you need help understanding programs that may be able to offer help? Starting on August 29th at 10:00 AM and repeating on September 26th and October 24th, Skidompha will host a local Case Manager who will have offer and info session, Q&A time, and opportunities to discuss personal support for people struggling with home heating costs.
On September 19th, 10:00 AM – 1:30 PM, Skidompha will host a Clothing Swap Saturday for Ages 12+ in Porter Hall. Have some clean clothes in good shape that don’t fit your kids anymore? Donate them! Do you have clothes that don’t meet your child’s style anymore? Let someone else love them! Please drop donations at bins located at Skidompha’s front and rear entrance, and at the Central Lincoln County Y.
And finally, Skidompha invites all those interested in local history, family history, and genealogy to explore the Skidompha Genealogy and Local History Center, located on the second floor of the library. While the collection focuses on Lincoln County, Maine, we also have material from other areas of Maine, New England, the US, Canada, and other countries. If you are not sure where to start, or need a helping hand, we have genealogy volunteers available on most Thursday afternoons from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM. It’s always a good idea to call ahead! Our volunteers are amazing, and can help with research and genealogy software, cemeteries, Maine Civil War records, the Skidompha Genealogy collection, Ancestry, State and Federal archives, transcriptions, the Maine collection, family stories, deeds and probate research, and more.
The second Thursday of every month, starting at 1:00 PM, our Genealogy and Local History Center also hosts a Round Table Meeting! Discussions are open forum format, and are a great place to bring any questions and comments about local history and personal genealogy you may have. Our avid local genealogists will discuss the questions together as a group to help each other find answers and share information.
