Art made for social purposes has a rich and diverse history, arguably going right back to the Paleolithic era when humans first began tracing handprints and animals on the walls deep in the dark recesses of caves in flickering candle light. Today, it is the stuff of art school degrees and social justice movements. Yet how well-known and understood is this practice outside the rarified air of art circles? What potential does socially engaged art hold for advancing justice, empowering individuals, and building stronger communities right here in Midcoast Maine? These are the questions taken up in this 3-session workshop, as social engagement artist, curator, writer, and educator Peter Bruun leads us on a journey around the world and across millennia, sharing examples of past and contemporary social engagement practices and models before arriving at the critical question we will dive into together: what might this have to do with us here and now?
