Anti-Racism Book Discussions
Tattoos on the Heart:  The Power of Boundless Compassion
by Gregory Boyle

Three meeting options:
August 20 – Afternoon discussion in person (register for details)
August 20 – via Zoom at 7 pm
September 18 – via Zoom at 7 pm

Leigh Anne Keichline, a Skidompha patron and educator trained in racial equity and diversity work, offers anti-racism book discussions for Skidompha.

Boyle’s book Tattoos on the Heart speaks to our ability to connect across class, status, race/ethnicity, religion, country of origin, and circumstance.  Through powerful storytelling, humor, and compassion, Boyle shares his ideas on “kinship,” most notably with his community at Homeboy Industries, the largest gang rehabilitation organization in the world.  While Boyle includes his unique perspectives as a Jesuit priest — in addition to teachings from world religions such as Sufi mystics, the Dalai Lama, and more — his stories and ideas leap out from any simple identifier, category, or box.  The voices of those with whom he works are vibrant as well in every chapter.  Your own perspectives, responses, and wrestlings with the book’s many themes will be warmly welcome in our discussions.

Three meeting options will be available:  August 20 afternoon in person (details when you register), August 20 evening via Zoom, and September 18 via Zoom.  You are welcome to join any one of these or all three of these to discuss Tattoos on the Heart (Thoughts on Boyle’s other books, his talks or interviews, and Homeboy Industries are also welcome.)

This book is highly recommended as an audio book experience!  Even if you read the print version, you may want to borrow or buy his audio version as well.  His other books are highly recommended on audio as well.

Email Leigh Anne at paperandshells@gmail.com to express interest. Please put “Tattoos on the Heart” in your subject line and your full name for registration at the beginning of your email.
