2013.11.22 GivingTuesday

Hello friends –

Meghan here this week, taking my turn to write to you all. Mostly I am just marveling at the fact that – somehow – it is already creeping towards December! There’s a lovely chill to the air, the days are getting shorter, and people are bustling about trying to tie up all the loose odds and ends before the end of the year. As busy as things are, we are hoping you will all take some time this coming Tuesday (November 28) to join us for an open house in honor of GivingTuesday.

GivingTuesday was started in 2012 as a “global generosity movement,” with the simple idea of celebrating generosity in your community. And our community is an exceedingly generous one! We would like to take the time to thank everyone who contributes – whether it’s money to our fall appeals, time to our programming, or a smile in the middle of the day – and show off some of what you enable us to do here at the Library. So, from 4:00 until 6:00 Tuesday afternoon, drop on in for some cider and some cookies, a chance to chat with members of our board, meet some of our new staff members, hear about upcoming programs, and give us some feedback!

In the same spirit, a generous donor has offered to match donations made this coming week, up to $5,000! Which means that any donation made on GivingTuesday, or the days following, will actually have double the impact in helping us provide services to the community. Our general operating budget covers everything from paper goods to energy costs to personnel, and it lets us build in flexibility for the future. There are also many other wonderful ways to give back to the community on GivingTuesday, or any other day. Skidompha hosts a Little Free Pantry, and we always welcome donations to it – dry goods and snacks are particularly appreciated. There are opportunities to volunteer time, whether with us or any of the organizations around town. And, of course, just being kind to your neighbors!

Happy Thanksgiving to anyone celebrating on Thursday, and we hope to see you next week!

Cheers,

Meghan Hawkes
